Energy Communities enable municipalities to harness local renewable resources with the aim of reducing residents’ electricity bills and improving industrial competitiveness through initiatives such as photovoltaic self-consumption, distributed storage, electric mobility, and energy retrofits. In addition to their technical nature, they have clear social value, as they bring together different stakeholders and entities within the municipality, such as residents, neighborhood associations, local industry and businesses, as well as the city council itself.

According to data from ECODES, there are currently 837 energy communities in Spain, 57% of which involve city councils. In the energy communities course for local governments, we will address questions such as:

  • What is an energy community, and what are its benefits and opportunities?
  • How can local entities participate in or promote these initiatives and provide a legal framework?
  • What types of activities can these projects undertake?
  • What funding mechanisms are available for these projects?
  • Success stories of energy communities involving local governments.
